Grade 1 GTE, First Term

Week 9

Today we played a fun Baamboozle game to revise what we learned this term. You should play it at home, too - it's a fun way to get ready for the assessment! You can play it at home by clicking on the link here: www.baamboozle.com/game/3762966

Week 8

Friday     Homework: GTE p.15-17     Presentation from today's lesson
Today we re-read the short-O books and completed the rest of the pages from the short-O unit. Good job, everybody!!!
Tuesday     Homework: GTE p.14 (we finished in class)     Presentation from today's lesson
In today's lesson, I introduced the short-O sound and we read the book Log Hop. Everybody is doing so well and I am so happy to see how involved the whole class gets in the lessons! Keep up the awesome work, 1E!
Monday      Homework: GTE p. 21-22
Today we practiced out reading out loud with Kipper and the Giant. We talked about how to change our voices when we read sentences that end with an exclamation mark ( ! ). We also talked about quotation marks ( "  " ) and how to change our voices when we read the part when someone is speaking. The class was amazing! Here's a video of Arathorn reading one of the pages out loud - it's perfect!!!

Week 7

Monday and Tuesday     Homework: GTE p. 12 (Monday), p.13 (Tuesday)
On Monday we had a funny lesson reading Kim is It and Zig and Zag out loud. I'm so proud of everyone reading with so much feeling and in such loud and clear voices!
For Tuesday, we continued reading out loud, and we finished up the short-I unit. Great job everyone!!!

Week 6

Friday     Homework: GTE p. 10-11
We started learning a new sound - the short-I! We read "Kim Is It!" and we worked on the first two pages of the unit (which is also the homework).

Please note that two of the numbers in the crossword puzzle are swapped.
  • 2 across should be "Pig, you ________! Said Kim."
  • 3 across should be: It's the pink animal from the story.

In Monday's lesson, we completed the short-E unit by making and playing a short-E board game. It was a hit with the class! Have a look at the photos below 📸😊

Week 5

Homework: (Tuesday) Read Jen Pen and Red Hen's Bus and bring them back to class for the next lesson
Today we learned about the short /ĕ/ sound. You guys are total experts! We read the story Jen Pen and focused on how to read sentences that end with a question mark and an exclamation point. Please remember to bring these books back to class for the next lesson 🙏

Week 4

Homework: GTE p.3, 4, 5     Presentation from Monday's lesson     Presentation from Friday's lesson
This week we started learning about the short /ă/ sound. You can watch the videos below to help you learn how to say this sound!
We also read the two stories - Sam's Cat Jan and Cam and Pat. Please re-read these books at home and make sure you know how to pronounce the short /ă/!

Week 3

Friday     Homework: GTE p.28-29     Presentation from the lesson     Click here for a Blooket game that you can play to practice the short A sound!!!
An important note: you should have received two sets of your Laugh a Lot Phonics books. Please take them home and stick or write your name on ALL books, and then bring them back and leave them in your locker. We will take out each book individually when it's time to read them in class.

In today's lesson, we learned all about question words: who, what, when, where, why and how.

  • Who: We use "who" when we want to know about a person. For example, "Who is your best friend?"
  • What: We use "what" to ask about things or ideas. For example, "What is your favorite toy?"
  • Where: We use "where" to ask about a place. For example, "Where do you live?"
  • When: We use "when" to ask about time. For example, "When is your birthday?"
  • Why: We use "why" to ask for reasons. For example, "Why do you like ice cream?"
  • How: We use "how" to ask about the way something is done. For example, "How do you tie your shoes?"
For the homework, on p.28 you need to write either a (  ?  ) or a (  .  ) in the bracket if it is a question or not. On p.29, you need to look at the answers and write questions for them.
Here are a couple songs to help your child remember 👇 Have a wonderful weekend!!

Monday and Tuesday     Homework: GTE p.19-20
Today, the students read In the Garden aloud, and they did an amazing job! I’m incredibly proud of their enthusiasm and their ability to read with expression in loud, clear voices. I emphasized to them, as I want to share with you, that I value their emotional delivery and clarity more than perfect pronunciation. Encouraging them to read with feeling is what truly matters. Feel free to practice reading with them at home, and I’ll have them read the story aloud again tomorrow.
For homework, please complete pages 19 and 20 in the GT English Book. We reviewed the vocabulary on page 19 in class, but if your child is unsure about any of the words, encourage them to locate it in the story and draw a picture of it independently. For page 20, they will find a passage from the story (hint: it starts on page 14) and should fill in the blanks with the missing words.
Great job today, everyone! Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Week 2

Friday     Homework: Read and bring "In the Garden" Oxford Reading Tree book on Monday
Today I read the story In the Garden to the class and we played some vocabulary games to follow-up. In the Garden is part of the Oxford Reading Tree series, and I'll usually call it "ORT" for short, so if your child writes "ORT" in their handbook, that's what it means.

I asked the class to read the story at home over the weekend, and bring it back to class on Monday.

When I read ORT books with the class, I will read it out loud myself first, modeling the tone and feeling I want the students to read with when they read out loud. In the next lesson, I will let each student read a page of the book, and I will guide them and give them encouragement to read with loud and clear voices in the classroom.

Thursday     Homework: GTE p.27     Presentation from the lesson
Thursday's lesson was actually Monday's lesson, so we just picked up where we left off in the GTE book.
First, we did a little song and dance to warm up - Pop-See-Ko! You can watch it below if you want to try at home 👇
Next, we brainstormed our favorite clothes and we wrote them on the board. Impressive!
After that, we brainstormed colors, and filled in the chart at the top of p.27
For the homework, you need to follow the example and then write about your favorite clothes! Have a look at the example to help you, but don't copy it exactly!

Tuesday     Homework: GTE p.26     Presentation from the lesson

We missed another lesson on Monday again due to the typhoon, but I hope everyone had a restful day off!
Today, we talked more about capital letters and punctuation at the end of sentences. To review:
  • Capital Letters:
Start every sentence with a big letter, like "A" or "B".
Always use a big letter for names, like "Sarah" or "Tom".
  • Punctuation:
Use a full-stop (.) at the end of a sentence to show it's finished.
Use a question mark (?) at the end of a question, like "What is your name?"
Use an exclamation mark (!) to show excitement, like "I love ice cream!"
Have another listen to the sentence song to help you learn 👇

Week 1

Friday     Homework: GTE p.24-25 (due Monday)     Presentation from the lesson

It's so nice to meet you, 1E!!!

Unfortunately, we missed Monday's lesson, but on Tuesday we got to know each other a bit, and I handed out your GT English (GTE) books and you wrote your names on them. We ended with a funny song and dance - the Milkshake Song! You can watch it below 👇

On Friday, we learned about capital letters. We started out with a capital letter song, and then talked about how we use them to write our names. You can find the presentation from the lesson here. You can also watch the Capital Letter song below 👇

For Friday's homework, you need to write your name along with your mom and dad's names (and don't forget to use capital letters!) on GTE p.24. Then on page 25, you need to fill out the chart about your family, and then write about them. You can use the example to help you write, but make sure to write about your own family.

I'm looking forward to having more fun together next week!!!

- Mr. Leigh 😊
