How are things different from long ago?

Spelling Quiz 2 is Tuesday, 10th October.
Click here for a link to the SWL

Week 4:

Thursday and Friday: Mr Joel briefed me on wha he taught for the last two classes. On Thursday, he taught the reading on SB p.38-39 and played a game to review the vocabulary. The class was interested in learning how to make ice cream, so they watched the video below 👇 Homework for Thursday is WB p.28-29.
On Friday, the class discussed how sugar is made and they watched another video about it (again, see below 👇). Then, they looked at the reading comprehension on WB p.30-31. Homework for the long weekend is to complee WB p.30-31, and SWL (2).
Tuesday, 26th September: Today was our first Spelling Quiz! Most of you did quite well 😁 It took a long time to get everybody settled in and ready for the quiz. Next time, I hope we can do our best to be ready to go at the beginning of the lesson. I asked Miss Tayla to help me hand back your Spelling Quiz books tomorrow, so please sign them and hand them back to me on Thursday.
Homework (Wednesday): Spelling Quiz Corrected and Signed.
Monday, 25th September: Today we reviewed the vocabulary from Unit 3 and talked a little bit about mixtures. Check out the video below about a really cool mixture - ice cream in a bag! Maybe you can try making it at home!
We also reviewed the verb "to be", and the past tense form of it. What is the verb "to be"? It's:
  • am, is, and are in the present tense.
  • and was and were in the past tense.
We completed pages 24(b) and 25(d+e) together in class, so no homework tonight - just prepare for your Spelling Quiz. Also, remember that for the challenge word, I will read ONE definition, and then the class needs to write the word for that definition.

Don't forget, tomorrow is the first Spelling Quiz! Good Luck!

Week 3:

Friday, 22nd September: Today we played an AWESOME game to learn the past tense. Click the link here to play: www.abcya.com/games/journey_to_past_tense
Remember to hand in your SWL on MONDAY, and Spelling Quiz 1 is on Tuesday!
Have a grat weekend!!!
Thursday, 21st September: Today we discussed the new Big Question: How Do Things Change. Have a look at the picture to the right. It's helpful to discuss it again with your child. You can ask him or her these questions that we talked about in class today:
  • What do you see?
  • What is the weather like?
  • Where do you think this is?
You can also further discuss these questions with your child:
  • What things change?
  • Can you hold water in your hand?
The class came up with some brilliant answers. We also discussed three important concepts in class today: solid, liquid, and gas. Remember, ice is a solid. A solid is anything that is not a liquid or a gas. Water is a liquid. And gas occurs when you heat water.

  • Tonight's homework is to complete pages 20+21 in your OD WB.
  • Homework for the weekend is to complete the SWL for the first Spelling Quiz. Please copy the words from Part A 3x, the sentences from Part B 3x, and the words and sentences from Part C 1x. Please hand your SWL in on MONDAY, 25/9.
  • Your first Spelling Quiz will be held on Tuesday, 26/9. Good luck!

Tuesday, 19th September: Today we learned about adverbs of frequency and wrapped up the first Big Question. So what are adverbs of frequency? Adverbs of frequency are words that we use to talk about how often we do something. The adverbs of frequency we learned today are:
  • always (you do it almost every day) ✔✔✔✔
  • usually (you do it most days) ✔✔✔
  • sometimes (you do it maybe once a week) ✔✔
  • hardly ever (you do it maybe once a month) ✔
  • never (you don't ever do it) ✖
For parts B, C, and D on pages 14 and 15, you should look at the chart on p.14 to answer. For part E, you should answer about yourself.
For page 18, you should write three words that you learned in Units 1 and 2, then write about what your favorite animal group is, and write two animals from that group. Finally, look at the pictures to solve the puzzles at the bottom of p.18
Homework is WB p.14, 15, and 18.
See you on Thursady!

Monday, 18th September: First of all, I hope everybody had a wonderful weekend! We are quite a bit behind the other classes, due to the lessons that we missed because of the typhoon and rainstorms. We also missed a few lessons because of schoolbus training and other beginning-of-school activities. So these next couple weeks, we are going to need to do a bit more to catch up. We should be back on track in October.
Today, we reviewed the vocabulary from Unit 1, as well as talked a bit about how animals are same and ow they are different. We focused on NOUNS and VERBS, and your child should understand the difference between the two. Please have a look at the presentation below. You can download the PDF version by clicking on the file 👇
Today's homework is OD WB p.10+11. We were able to finish most of it in class today, but you can also check your answers with the ones below. We also started talking about ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY, which we will continue in the next lesson.
Finally, just one more reminder: next Tuesday is the Spelling Quiz. I will assign the SWL on Friday, so the kids can do it over the weekend. For the SWL, students should copy Part A 3x (words only), Part B 3x (sentences), and Part C 1x.

Week 2:

Friday, 15th September: Today we had our first taste of GRAMMAR in the form of PRONOUNS and I tried to make them as yummy as possible 😋 First, I reviewed what a NOUN is (a person, place, or thing). Next, we learned that a PRONOUN is a word that replaces a noun. For example, Hong Kong is a place, and the pronoun that we use to replace a place is 'IT'. Mr. Leigh is a person/man, so the pronouns we can use to replace Mr. Leigh are 'HE' or 'HIS'. And finally, a schoolbag is a thing, so the pronoun we can use to replace a thing is also 'IT'. Have a look at the slides below, or click on the PDF to download today's entire lesson! 👇
Homework is to complete WB p.6+7 and hand it in on MONDAY. We were able to do most of the HW together in class and check our answers, so most of you won't have much to do over the weekend. Have a great one!

Tuesday, 12th September: Today we had a really good lesson talking about the similarities and differences between lions and whales. First, we started off by reviewing the vocabulary that we learnt in the last lesson, and discussing the different animal groups. Then we read the story about lions and whales on WB p.4+5. Finally, we did some of the questions from the homework together. Most of the class should have finished the homework in class already, so please make sure you hand it in tomrrow. Homework is OD WB p.4-5.

Monday, 11th September: Today we had a very productive lesson! I introducted the first BIG QUESTION: How are animals different from one another. We had a fantastic discussion about animals. Lot's of really great ideas! For example, someone said that bees are an animal that help us. Totally! Bees are maybe the most important animal on this planet! We also talked about how dogs help us - lots of great responses, too! One other cool thing to note was that when I asked the class where they think they are in the picture you see here 👉
At first they said Africa, but when I asked if they thought it could be somewhere else, someone said Japan. And I totally agreed - I went to a safari park like this in Japan before. We had a nice little sharing about that, too. I'm not the only one who's been there 😃

Finally, I went over Oxford Discover WB pages 2 and 3 with the class and we worked on the first part together. Everyone needs to write a sentence for the first Big Question part. The structure of your sentence should look like this: "My favorite animal is a ________________ , because _______________________________________________________________." And you can just fill in the blanks with your favorite animal and a reason why you like it.  The rest of pages 2 and 3 is pretty self-explanitory. You should refer to OD Student Book pages 8 and 9 to help complete your homework.
Homework is to complete OD WB pages 2 and 3 and hand it in tomorrow. We finished most of it in class already, so it should be easy to finish at home!

Week 1:

Hi everybody!
Thursday, 7th September: Today we did............NOT MUCH 😂 The whole lesson was taken up by these three things:
  1. Sticking name labels on your Oxford Discover Student Book and Workbook. These name labels make it MUCH easier for me to see who the books belong to, so please keep these on your books.
  2. Handing out the Term 1 SWL. It is a blue color paper and it has the two Spelling Word Lists for the first term. Please keep this in a safe place at home and don't lose it! (If you do lose it, look for the file to download it below 👇
  3. Sticking your Raz-Kids login/password in your General Information Handbook. The principal is checking/signing your General Information Handbooks now, and you will get it back after he is finished.
  4. I will hand out the Home Readers tomorrow. The book is The Very Hungry Bear.
A couple important notes about the above items.
  • I will assign the first SWL sometime in week 3, likely on Friday, September 22nd. The first Spelling Quiz will be held on the 26th of September.
  • The average mark of BOTH spelling quizzes will be counted for 10 marks on your first assessment.
  • Please make sure you complete your first Raz-Kids assignment before 25th October. Raz-Kids assignments count for 10 marks on each of this year's assessments.
  • The Reader Quiz counts for 10 marks on your first assessment. This term we are reading The Very Hungry Bear. Please make sure to take good care of it and be prepared for the Reader Quiz on 24th October.

Tuesday, 5th September: We missed a double lesson yesterday, so today was our first lesson. Today I just introduced myself to you and we got to know each other. No homework! If you did not have your Oxford Discover WB with you today, please bring it to the next lesson and I will put a label on it for you. I would like everybody to use my labels because it makes it easier for me to find your name and student number 😁
