Week 15-16
These days we kept doing the practice quizzes and playing revision games. I love the natural resouces posters that you made! Amazing! No homework these days, but you can keep studying for your assessments these days. You can play some of the Blookets that we used to practice this term here:
- play.blooket.com/play?hwId=65e528ec5149f179935bfaa8 (can and may)
- play.blooket.com/play?hwId=65e52955688715b4ca22b841 (simple past irregular verbs)
- play.blooket.com/play?hwId=65e5299deec378163dfb704a (U9-10 vocab)
- play.blooket.com/play?hwId=65e529c37f1b122a17ef4dd1 (U11-12 vocab)
Tuesday: We were lucky to have some extra lesson time this morning, so we took advantage of it and did a practice quiz. For this quiz, we did WB pages 72 and 73. I gave the class 10 minutes to complete parts A, B, and C, and then we swapped books with a classmate and they marked eachothers answers. This is a really good way to see how your child can manage answering questions on their own without any assistance. You can use this as a study tool is to see what they had a hard time with on these two pages, and then focus on those questiion types. We'll do this again in the next lesson with the wrap-up from the next big question.
And then in the English lesson, we did our Reader Quiz and continued working on our natural resources collage. Please finish this in the next two days and hand it in to me on Thursday.
Homework is to complete your natural resource collage and hand it in on Thursday.

Monday: Today we wrapped up the last big question of the term: Why should we take care of the Earth?
I introduced the project - making a natural resources collage. You can find the instructions and an example on page 125 of the student book. We also discussed what we need to do in class today and we made an example together in Canva. For your collage, you should think of the following questions and write down some information about HOW we can save your natural resource. Finally, we got started (on recycled paper, of course!). Have a look at the following examples. We're going to work on this in class for now, so I'm not sending it home for homework yet.
Homework is simple - study for your Reader Quiz and don't forget to bring your book with you tomorrow!

Monday: Kung hei fat choi! Welcome back everybody! I hope you all had a happy and healthy week off!
Today we jumped right back into learning, with PREOPOSITIONS OF PLACE. The prepositions of place that we learnt today were quite easy for everyone. There are only two that are somewhat confusing, but I spend a good amount of time explaining to the class. Here are the preositions of place that we learned:

Week 12
Tuesday: We started off today's lesson by playing the Blooket game that we created yesterday. After we played, we went on to talk about what the "main idea" and "details" are. You can read more about this on Student Book page 109, but in a nutshell, the main idea is usually the first sentence in a text. It tells about what we will be reading.
On page 109, the main idea is "Rules in parks help to keep them clean and the animals safe."
The details are the four things that are listed after. The main idea covers all of the details.
For the homework, the same goes for the text on WB page 94. The first sentence is the main idea and all of the other sentences are the details. You can have a look at the picture below. The main idea is highlighted in yellow, and the rest of the highlighted sentences are details.
Homework is to complete pages 94-95 in your OD WB and hand it in tomorrow.

Thursday: Today we started the new unit by having a really great discussion about the new big question: Why should we take care of the Earth?
We talked about how important bees are to life on Earth. It was so cute, too - at the beginning of the lesson I said, "Do you know that you have two mothers?" and puzzled, they said "Who? Miss Chan? Miss Tayla?!" Ha! No, it's Mother Earth!
Below are two videos that we watched in class today. Have a look and discuss with your child at home - they really know a lot about why we should protect the Earth!
I passed back the Spelling Quiz books today. Homework is to sign and correct the Spelling Quiz and hand it back tomorrow.

Thursday: In today's lesson we reviewed the answers from Monday's homework on p.87. When you are writing questions using 'can' and 'may', you should make sure that the answers match the question. For example:
Finally, we brainstormed titles for our rules poster and we talked about different kinds of lettering that we can use when we make our posters. Everyone is getting excited - we're going to start tomorrow!
No homework! Yay!
- Can I watch TV? -> No, you can't. / No, you cannot. / Yes, you can.
- May I go to the toilet? -> Yes, you may. / No, you may not.

Monday: In the double lesson today, we reviewed the reading from last week and talked about how to be good friends. We watched a short story called "Love is" that you can watch it again below 👇🏼
We also learned about "can" and "may" and when and how to use them.
Finally, we went over the homework and did a couple questions together. On page 87, you need to look at the pictures and see who is speaking. For example, in question 1, two people are speaking, so the question is "Can we watch TV?" and the answer is "No, you can't." When you answer, you should do two things: first, look at the subject of the question. In this case, it's we. When you give your answer, you need to pretend like you are the one talking to the two girls, so you would say "No, you can't.", and imagine that you are pointing to them when you say it.
Homework is to complete WB pages 86-87 and hand it in tomorrow.
We also learned about "can" and "may" and when and how to use them.
- We use "can" informally, usually when talking to friends or speaking casually.
- We use "may" formally, when talking to parents, teachers, or important people.

Week 8
Friday: Today's lesson was wonderful! First we had a class discussion about how to be nice to people, and then we talked about what a 'theme' is (it's the main idea of a story). Next, we read the Please and Thank You Book of Poems on student book pages 98 and 99. Everyone had a very good idea of the themes of each poem and we had a wonderful sharing session. After reading the poems, we read and discussed WB p.84 and went over the questions for homework.
Homework is to complete WB p.84-85 and hand it in on Monday.

Week 3
Friday: Today we continued working on our board games. I want you to do these things when you are making your final game:
- Make sure your spaces are big enough to write questions inside.
- Make your board game look neat and tidy. I gave you a second sheet to do your FINAL version on. The first sheet can be for practice.
- Include questions that are about what we learned for this big question - When do we use subtraciton? You can find lots of good questions from your Oxford Discover Student Book and Workbook! Have a look at the example below 👇
Thursday: We started working on our projeccts today - making a subtraction board game! This should be a fun activity for the class to use their creativity and also the things that they have learnt in this big question. In today's lesson, we went over different board game layouts, question types and themes that we can use for our games. Then we started drawing our boards! Have a look below for some help and inspiration!

Week 2
Friday: Today we wrapped up irregular past tense verbs, focusing on the helping verb 'did' and how it helps the main verb. I'll explain:
Homework this weekend is to complete your SWL (3). Write the words in Part A 3x each, write the sentences in Part B 3x each, and write the word and definition in Part C 1x each. Please hand in your SWL on Monday. Spelling Quiz 3 is on Tuesday!
- Look at the question: Did you eat your lunch?
- We call the verb 'did' a helping verb, because it helped change the question to the past tense.
- When there is a helping verb, you don't need to change the main verb (in this case, eat) to the past tense.
- Sentences can also have helping verbs. For example: I didn't eat my lunch.

Tuesday: Today we learned the vocabulary from Unit 8 (SB p.76). We played a matching game in class, and then I let everyone work on the homework since it is quite easy. Homework is to complete WB p.64+65 and hand it in tomorrow.
Monday: Today we reviewed the reading comprehension homework from last week, and then we moved on to a new topic - irregular past tense verbs.
Irregular past tense verbs are verbs that do not end in -ed. There's no real rule for learning irregular past tense verbs, so the best way to learn them is through repitition.
I also spend some time with the class going over the homework. Homework is WB p. 60-61 - please hand it in tomorrow (you should have probably finished most, if not all of it in class already). It's pretty straightforward, but for part F, on p.61, you need to give a tick or a cross, and write a sentence regardless of whethter you did or didn't do it. Have a look at the two examples below.

Oh! And a special bonus picture of the kids in class today. Where are they? What did they do? They HID under their desks!
Week 1
Friday: Today we learned the reading comprehension on pages 58-59 in the OD WB. Remember, it's important to reread, especially when we're talking about math! We also played a fun little vocabulary game.

We also discussed what 'rereading' is, and we went over what an 'informational text' is.
No homework tonight!
We also discussed what 'rereading' is, and we went over what an 'informational text' is.
- Rereading is an important skill to help us remember what we have read. Sometimes you might need to read something more than one time if you don't understand it the first time. And it's especially when we're talking about math. When you're doing math, you should always reread the problem and your answers - that's called double-checking.
- And informational texts are texts that tell us about our world. They give us "information" and they are real, not made-up. Harry Potter IS NOT an informational text. National Geograpic IS an informational text.
No homework tonight!
Tuesday: Today we discussed some of the questions that the class wrote in their Big Question Charts, and we learned the new vocabulary from U.7.
There were some wonderful questions that we will re-visit over the next few weeks. Have a look below!
Homework tonight is to complete WB p.56+57 and hand it in tomorrow. We did some of it together in class today. You can also have a look below.
Hint: the answers are all from the vocabulary that we learnt in our student books.

Monday: How good it is to be back and see all of your smiling faces! I have to admit, I was a bit nervous coming to school today, but the second I walked in the classroom and was greeted with smiles and cheers, I felt right at home! It is SO good to see everyone again!!!
For today's lesson, we talked about the new Big Question: When do we use subtraction?
There was a lot of great discussion and the students shared about when they use subtracion in their daily lives. We also talked about what math is (in USA, we call it math, in UK, they call it maths, but it's the same thing and neither are wrong).
We also learned a new way to subtract from left to right without borrowing. Have a look at the YouTube video and see if your child remembers this hack. There were a lot of minds blown haha! www.youtube.com/shorts/duPHC7YFP-A
Finally, we filled out part of the Big Question Chart. We can refer to this chart as a KWL chart - which means what we know, what we want to know, and what we learned at the end. This is something that we will be doing for each Big Question from now on. When the topic is introduced, we will fill out the K and the W parts, but we will aways leave the L for the end of the units - after we finish the projects. Speaking of projects, for this unit, we will be making a subtraction board game. I can't wait!
Homework is to compete the first two parts of the Big Question Chart - What do you know? and What do you want to know? For the What you want to know part, think of a few questions about what you want to know about the topic and write them down. We will share them in the next lesson.
