Grade 4 GTE: Third Term

Realistic Fiction | Word Choice | Problems and Solutions | Writing a Letter | Messages

Week 13: Revision

This week we had a discussion about the concepts that we learnt this term. The revision worksheet that I sent home with the class last Friday covers all of the concepts, too. Two things:
  1. It is very important to know and understand the concepts learnt in this term's Guiding Notes. It's far more important to understand the concepts than to try to memorize different spellings and grammar.
  2. The next most important thing is to CAREFULLY read the questions and instructions, and make sure you understand what you need to answer during the assessment. I know many students try to rush through the test as fast as they can without really paying attention to the instructions. When you read the instructions carefully, and also answer the questions carefully, it is directly reflected in your assessment marks!
I am very confident that you will do good on the test! Take a deep breath, get enough sleep, and eat healthy! You've got this!!!

Week 12: Messages

This week we talked about how good authors put messages in their stories. These messages are known as the BIG IDEA of a story. In the story Owl Moon, we talked about the message - how you don't need to speak to communicate and know how others feel.

The homework this week is to write about a special moment that you had with someone. Think about the person you had that memory with, and write some adjectives about it in the organizer on page 19, then write about it on page 20 of your Guiding Notes. Homework is to complete GN p.19-20 and hand it in on Monday.

Week 8: How we can relate to good books

Today we had a fun and easy day. We started the lesson by discussing and brainstorming our favorite books. Remember, books that we can relate to make them more interesting and fun for us to read! After brainstorming our favorite books, we wrote them down on GN p.13, and then chose one to talk about why it's our favorite. Homework is to complete pages 13 and 14 in your guiding notes, and hand it in tomorrow.

Week 7: Writing a story with a problem and resolution

In today's lesson, we gpt started on our unit 3 writing task - writing a story with a problem and resolution. For this task, you should first choose a problem from the list of problems in part C on page 11 of your Guiding Notes (ignore the page numbers on the PowerPoint slides below), circle it, and then write how you would solve it. And then on the following page (GN p.12), you should write a short story about a problem and how it gets solved. Remember, this should be a story, not just telling a problem and it's resolution. Also, remember to give your story a title. Homework is to complete pages 11 and 12 in your guiding notes and hand it in on Friday, 12/5.

Week 7: Problems and resolutions

This week we talked about how stories have problems, and throughout the story, they're solved. This is called the solution or resolution. The class came up with some good examples from stories that they're read. For example, the one of the problems in Harry Potter is that Voldemort wants to kill Harry, and the resolution is that Harry learns magic and defeats Voldemort. Your Oxford Reading Tree books also have many problems and solutions. Have a look at them if you can't think of any.

Homework is to complete p.10 in your Guiding Notes book and hand it in tomorrow. We also played a blooket to revise the vocabulary words for the homework. You can play it here: play.blooket.com/play?hwId=64589f1dd7879a1bf5539f7a

Week 6: Homophones part 2

Today we talked more about homophones, and created a "homophone meme" (a homophonic pun with a picture). THere were some really funny ones that I saw in class! For page 8 in your Guiding Notes, you need to make a homophonic pun title for a story and write a short story about it. Homework is to complete pages 7-8 in your GN and hand it in on Wednesday, 26/4

Week 5: Homophones

This week we learned about homophones. HOMOPHONES are words that sound the same but have different spelling, like see and sea, hair and hare, bored and bored, etc. In this unit, we will be creating homophonic puns, which are jokes that use homophones. Have a look at the examples we created in class today - hilarious!!!
Homework is to complete p.5-6 in your Guiding Notes and hand it in tomorrow.

Week 3: Making inferences

Today we learned about inferences. Everyone had a really great concept of them, too!

Remember, an inference is not a guess - it is a conclusion made based on evidence. For example: If I am laughing, you can infer that I am happy. If a person is strong, you can infer that they like to do exercise. If it is snowing outside, you can easily infer that it is cold.

For today's homework, I want you to write a short realistic fiction story about a believeable situation with yourself as the main character. When you finish, choose two parts of your story and write inferences.

Week 2: Realistic Fiction

Today we learned the difference between realistic fiction and fantasy (or regular fiction). Remember, stories that are made up but seem real are realistic fiction, whle stories that have magic, talking animals, monsters, aliens, etc, are fantasy.
Homework is to complete pages 1 and 2 in your GN books and hand it in tomorrow.
