Week 5 Zoom: TUESDAY ONLY! 5D - you are welcome to join on Tuesday, 28th September
Because of National Day, there isn't a scheduled Zoom for Friday, so 5D students are welcome to join on Tuesday. This time we will start with chapter two and spend most, if not all of the time reading out loud in the Zoom. Please find the log-in information for Tuesday's Zoom in the PDF at the bottom of the page :)
For everybody who joined this week's Zoom, great job reading out loud! Please make sure you finish chapter two before next week's zooms.

**Friday update: Today we will be talking about the main focus of the first chapter, which is friendship and insecurity. Did Ellen feel insecure? Why or why not? Did Ellen feel like she had any friends? In the lesson we will have discussed these two questions.
Below I'm sharing the short story from our lesson about body image and loving ourselves for who we are, which I think is a very important idea at your age (and any age, really).
For next week's lesson, please have your book and be prepared to read the second chapter. Enjoy and have a wonderful weekend!

Sorry for the late notice, but the school notified us that the campus will be closing early today for Mid-Autumn Festival. Hope to see you all on Friday!
Week 3 Zoom (14th + 17th Sept): Chapter 1 Ellen's Secret
This week we'll be doing a few things. First, I'd like to introduce you to the author, Beverly Cleary. Did you know that she was 105 years old when she passed away this year? We will also be discussing the setting of the story, and then we will finish by doing some reading out-loud. Finally, I'd like everyone to try to finish reading the first chapter, Ellen's Secret, before the next Zoom session in week 4.
When you read Ellen Tebbits, I want you to keep the setting in mind. The story is not taking place in modern times. Ellen Tebbits was written in 1951 - and that's when the story takes place - so there will be many differences to how things are today. Cleary's stories also reference something called Americana, which means anything related to the history, geography, folklore, and cultural heritage of the United States of America. Below you can see some pictures of Americana in the 1950's - these can help paint a picture in your mind as you read the story.

Information about the new GT English readers:
This year we will be replacing the Oxford Reading Tree stories in GT English with three new stories that have been carefully selected by our English team. These stories are part of the GT English curriculum and will not be counted towards the assessment. Please see the notices below regarding the new readers for GT English and the weekly Zoom reading sessions.
I'm also very excited to annouce that I will be holding a weekly Zoom reading session with 5C (on Tuesdays) and 5D (on Fridays) from 3-3:30pm. These reading sessions are completely optional, but a good opportunity to connect with me, have more discussions about the book, and practice reading out loud - I hope you'll join some, if not all, of the sessions!
