Week 14: Elements of fables, and summarizing a story
In today's lesson, we talked about the qualities of fables, and how fables are similar (have a look at the pictures below). We answered questions using complete sentences, and then discussed. For today's homework, you need to complete p.19-20 in your Guiding Notes and hand it in tomorrow, 22/2.

Week 13: Why writers write
Today we talked about the different reasons why writers write - to entertain, to teach, or both.
So how can we tell how writers write to entertain? Some of the reasons we came up with: it's funny, it's fictional, there are characters, there's a plot, it's poetry...
And writers write to teach by: writing nonficiton and telling us facts
Sometimes writers write to teach and entertain us. One type of story that does this is a FABLE. We read some of Aesop's Fables. Fables teach us about MORALS and CONSEQUENCES (remember these words - you wrote them in your notes).
In the next lesson, we will learn more about morals and Aesop's Fables. No homework today - we finished it in class! Enjoy the long weekend!!!

Week 12: Writing about our neighborhoods
Today we talked about the places where we live and brainstormed some adjectives to describe them. Fot this week's assignment, we will be writing about the neighborhoods we live in. You should complete the organizer on p.15 of your Guiding Notes to help you with your writing on p.16.
For your homework, you need to write about your neighborhood. Remember to start it off by saying "_________________ is a ____________________ neighborhood in __________________________." And don't forget to organize your ideas in paragraphs. Homework is to complete p.15-16 in your guiding notes and hand it in on Thursday, 9/2.

Week 11: Introducing realistic fiction and Beverly Cleary
In today's lesson we learned about the author Beverly Cleary (Daybook p.70-71). We talked about the vocabulary from the passage, and we talked about the neighborhood where Cleary grew up - the inspiration for her realistic fiction stories. You can re-watch the video below about realistic fiction if you are still unclear what it is. In short, realistic fiction is when an author writes a story that is not real, but it seems real and has elements of real life. Realistic fiction doesn't have talking creatures, magic, time travel, or other elements of fiction.

Week 9: Making boring sentences fun!
First off I just want to say how much I enjoyed this lesson.
Today, we looked at boring sentences, and then made them INTERESTING. Just like last week, the idea was to create sentences that make the reader FEEL what the writer is trying to say. In the activity we did, there were some fantastic sentences made by the class. You can see the process of changing a boring sentence into an interesting one in the example below.
Homework is to complete p.11-12 in your guiding notes. I'd like you to hand it in after the CNY holiday (on 30/1)

- Have a look at the boring sentence.
- Make a list of some interesting words that describe the idea of the sentence.
- Use some (not all - don't go overboard) of the interesting words to re-write the sentence. You can also make up words! Scriggly!
- Check and make sure that the interesting sentence you wrote makes you FEEL something.

Week 4: Creating your own character and "Show, Not Tell"
Today we revisted the story Ellen Tebbits and talked about how the author, Beverly Cleary, describes her characters. What she does is something called Show, not tell. Show, don't tell is important for making our writing more INTERESTING. Have a look at the example that we did in class:
When you do the homework, you should also show, not tell when you write your character sketch. Homework this week is to complete p.7-8 in your Guiding Notes and hand it in on Thursday, 14/12. Chrisitmas Blooket! play.blooket.com/solo?id=63a00b83aba6c7c54ed76b65 ![]()

Week 3: Characters (Ellen Tebbits and author Beverly Cleary)
First of all, I want to share how proud I am of the work that you did on your graphic aids. Scroll down to see!
In today's lesson, we started the second unit - Ellen Tebbits. In this unit we will be learning about characters and their traits. In the end of the unit, we will create our own characters and write a character sketch. We learned about the author Beverly Cleary, and did a fun online scavenger hunt by scanning the QR code on Guiding Notes p.5 and finding the answers to the questions. If you didn't finish in class, then you should scan the code at home, or you can go to www.beverlycleary.com. My favorite question: What does D.E.A.R. stand for? Drop Everything and Read Have a look at the characters we brainstormed today in the photo beside. Homework is to complete p.5-6 in your Guiding Notes and hand it in tomorrow, 7/12. |
Here are some Graphic Aids created by 5E students - wonderful!!!
Week 2: Graphic Aids part 2
This week I showed the class how to make a graphic aid using Canva. Have a look at the example that we created below :)
In the lesson, I also gave the students time to research their topic using the iPads. We discussed what elements can be found in graphic aids. You should try and include a few different elements in your graphic aid.
Some things to note:

Some things to note:
- For the homework, you can either (1) make a graphic aid on Canva, print it, and stick it in your book. (2) Draw it in your book, or (3) Draw it on another paper and stick it in your book.
- You can search "infographic" templates on Canva, but don't just copy one that is already done. That's cheating!
- You can sign up for Canva for education if you sign in with your school email address. You should do this, because you can unlock everything for free!

Week 1: Graphic Aids
Today we learnt about graphic aids and how we use them to convey a piece of information using words and images. We learnt that graphic aids can be maps, graphs, charts, or brochures. We also talked about where we can find graphic aids - in malls, MTR stations, zoos, parks, and many more places.
In the Guiding Notes book, there is a graphic aid about fostering animals in Hong Kong. It has a lot of information. Have a look at all of the different things it tells us and remember, graphic aids can tell us many things!

Next week we will be researching a topic and creating our own graphic aids. Please have a look at GN p.3-4 before the lesson next week, but don't do it yet. We will spend time in the lesson using iPads to research our topics. I will also show the class how to use Canva, if they choose to use it to create their graphic aid.
Homework this week is to complete GN p.1-2. Please hand it in on Monday. Also, please return your Twits reader on Monday if you have not.
